1. Controlling Emissions from Wood Boilers
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Currently, the use of emission controls on wood boilers is limited and has seen incremental forward movement, as compared with the advances used in Europe. The use of advanced boiler designs, as well as, the use of emission control devices such as ESPs and baghouses are commonly deployed in Europe on small wood boilers (units 1 million Btus and larger). However, in the United States the use of advanced emission controls devices is rare, and has generally been limited to the use of fabric filters. The lack of progress and market penetration for the development of control strategies can, in part, be attributed to the small market for controls for these systems, and the fact that, on the basis of a unit’s size and annual output most units do not trigger state permitting thresholds for evaluating and applying LAER (Lowest Achievable Emission Rate) or BACT (Best Available Control Technology, notwithstanding the potential air quality and public health impacts from these boilers. The following attributes can influence emissions unit performance:

Measurements and Modeling of Flue Height Influence on Air Pollution Emissions and Thermal Efficiency of Natural Draught Gas Fired Boilers
This paper presents and analyses results from experimental and CFD work undertaken on a 24 kW domestic natural-draught gas fired boiler. The effect of chimney height on boiler flue gases is being considered to address the need for increasing concern over environmental safety as well as saving of energy. A multi-component analysis computer (DELTA 2000 CD) is used to analyze the flue gases. 3D nu...
متن کاملEmission of PCDD/F, PCB, and HCB from combustion of firewood and pellets in residential stoves and boilers.
To assess potential emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) from residential combustion of biofuels, experiments were performed in which various types of pellets and firewood were combusted in four types of stoves and boilers, with both full and reduced rates of air supply. Inter...
متن کاملSmall-scale Pellet Boiler Emissions – Characterization and Comparison to Other Combustion Units
Residential combustion has been identified as one of the main sources of particulate matter (PM); fine particles are important because of their adverse effects on human health and the environment. In this thesis, fine particle emissions originating from residential pellet combustion were characterized in different operational situations and using different raw materials as pellet fuel. Moreover...
متن کاملLife-Cycle Carbon from Waste Wood Used in District Heating and Other Alternatives
Using wood wastes provides an opportunity to avoid fossil carbon emissions from the combustion of natural gas or other fossil fuels. Using a life-cycle assessment, a new biomass boiler sourced by forest residuals, sawmill residuals, and clean demolition material (CDM) was compared with an existing natural gas boiler for supplying heat to a large-scale district heating system. Potential alternat...
متن کاملNitrogen oxides emission control options for coal-fired electric utility boilers.
Recent regulations have required reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from electric utility boilers. To comply with these regulatory requirements, it is increasingly important to implement state-of-the-art NOx control technologies on coal-fired utility boilers. This paper reviews NOx control options for these boilers. It discusses the established commercial primary and secondary con...
